Welcome to KCTCS Online Academic Advising. As you begin or continue your higher education, please take advantage of the academic advising services available to you. Setting appropriate goals and making the right decisions necessary to reach them are crucial components to student success. KCTCS Online is committed to providing the help necessary for students to succeed. Here you will find the following resources to help you with responsible decision making about your academic career.

KCTCS Online is committed to a developmental academic advisement process in which students and advisors participate and focus on the whole person to determine the student’s opportunities and how they can be realized.  Effective student advising requires a partnership between the advisor and the student.

Student Responsibilities

  • Becoming an active participant in your career decision-making process
  • Discovering your skills, values, and personality
  • Developing realistic and attainable educational and career goals
  • Following through on actions discussed and identified by you and your Advisor
  • Taking responsibility to make your own career choices
  • Being prepared with a list of questions that you want to ask your advisor
  • Planning course module selections according to program requirements
  • Being prepared with accurate information and relevant materials
  • Determining ahead of time your outside commitments
  • Researching career opportunities available to graduate from your degree program
  • Seek out academic and career information needed to meet educational goal           

Advisor Responsibilities

  • Assisting students through a self assessment process
  • Understanding the career decision-making process
  • Exploring barriers to decision making
  • Possessing skills in helping students explore their personality, interest, skills and values
  • Assisting students with exploring their career goals
  • Promoting activities that examine career goals
  • Understanding the changing nature of work in today’s society
  • Being familiar with new emerging vocational fields
  • Assisting students with choosing academic programs
  • Knowing the career and transfer programs available at the college
  • Knowing the requirements of programs
  • Knowing the success of the program graduates
  • Referring students to other campus resources
  • Assisting students with selecting course modules
  • Knowing available course modules
  • Knowing special information about the course modules (prerequisites)
  • Knowing rules and regulations of the college
  • Assisting student with scheduling courses
  • Being able to read the master schedule
  • Knowing the registration procedures and paperwork required
  • Listening to the student’s requests about accommodating outside responsibilities

KnowHow2GOKy.org is an interactive web site that outlines the steps to college for middle and high school students, transfer students, and adults at different stages of their education.

For students interested in transfer, the web site features a special section on transfer including three steps to transfer, and planning tools to help navigate the transfer process, explore careers, search colleges/universities and find financial aid.  The Transfer Handbook is available electronically at knowhow2goky.org.

The Go Higher Kentucky Website helps Kentuckians plan, apply, and pay for college. The site includes online admissions and financial aid applications, as well as services for adult education and GEAR UP Kentucky participants.

Every KCTCS Online student has access to DISCOVER, a job planning web site. DISCOVER will help you learn about careers that suit your skills and personality. The site will also help you search for jobs in your preferred field. Contact our job placement coordinator to gain access to DISCOVER, and let us help put you to work!
